Election 2019

On Tuesday, November 5th, 2019, East Granby voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots for First Selectman, Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, Board of Education, Planning and Zoning, and other elected officials.  Below is information on the candidates running on the Republican ticket.

First Selectman

Todd Zessin (R – Candidate)

Todd was born and raised in East Granby and has lived in town for 27 years. After graduating from East Granby High School, he attended the University of New Haven and later Mitchell College for Sport/Business Management. Todd has served on the East Granby Volunteer Fire Department and returned to East Granby High School to serve as soccer coach for three years. He is employed as a manager at an East Granby business. Committed to helping current businesses and promoting new development in town, he wants to focus on ensuring the town stays fiscally responsible. He is passionate about tapping into the potential in town, making East Granby the perfect place to go to school, raise a family, and stay in town to retire.

 
 
   
 
 
 
 


Board of Selectmen

John Ziobro (R – Incumbent)

John and his wife Lucia have lived in East Granby since 1996. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran and is part owner of a small business that overhauls large commercial jet engines. John has served three terms as Selectman and is a member of the Board of Education.

John is seeking re-election as Selectman. As Selectman, John has kept general government spending increases to a minimum and will strive to keep municipal expenses as low as possible without negatively impacting necessary services. His understanding of town finances will be valuable in helping the Board of Education with potential coordination of non-education functions.

 
  
 
 


Board of Finance

Glenn Zaugg (R – Candidate)

Glenn and his wife Renee have been residents of East Granby since 1995 where they raised their two children. He recently retired from a 38+ year career at Aetna. Glenn has previously served on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He also owns a local business as Owner-Operator of Greenscape Lawncare for more than ten years.

 
  
 
  
 

 
  
 

Rich Galluccio (R – Candidate)

Rich, along with his wife Lee, has been a long-time resident of East Granby. He has a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering as well as a MS in Management. During a working career, he spent over 30 years involved in the US Space program environmental controls and hydraulic equipment. He was previously elected to the East Granby Board of Education and spent 10 years as Chairman. He currently serves as the Chairman of the East Granby Commission On Aging. Rich has also been active in East Granby over the years in many volunteer activities including the soccer and baseball programs, High School Library Building Committee and Library Board. Rich is committed to keeping East Granby a place for people of all ages to live and thrive.

 
  
 


Board of Education

Lucia Ziobro (R – Incumbent)

Lucia and her husband, Selectman John Ziobro, have resided in East Granby since 1996. She has recently retired from a 30+ year career as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Connecticut, focusing on the rights and support of children. She currently serves the town as Vice Chair of the Commission on Aging. On the Board of Education, Lucia would draw on her experience as an attorney and children’s advocate to deal with childhood legal issues and related matters.

 
 
 
 
 

John Corcoran (R – Candidate)

John served on the Board of Education from 2003 – 2015, where he also chaired the Facilities Committee. He also served as Co-Chairman of both the High School Building Committee and Middle School Renovation Committee, with both school projects finishing under budget. He has also served as Vice Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and is a Past President of the East Granby Lions Club. He received his B.S. in Building Construction from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and has worked as a Construction Superintendent for the past 30 years. John and his family have lived in East Granby since 1993.

 
 
 
 
 

Rick Bortz (R – Candidate)

Ricky Bortz moved to East Granby in 2016 after serving as a submariner in the US Navy for six years in the nuclear program. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Northeastern University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude while also working full time. He is currently Regional Sales Manager for the Eastern US for a company that produces food, beverage and pharmaceutical process equipment.

Ricky has lived in seven different states over past years and is happy to be settled in East Granby with his wife, Bridget, and their two girls – one two years old, the other just under a year old. He is running for the Board of Education to ensure that his children will have a good education when they are ready to attend school in East Granby.

 
 


Planning and Zoning

Anglea Ciotone (R – Candidate)

Angela has been a resident of East Granby since 2004 and works as an attorney. She holds a B.A. from UConn and a law degree from Western New England University School of Law. Angela has been active in the community serving as Chair of the Commission on Youth Services, Vice Chair of the Juvenile Review Board, and as Alternate on the Planning and Zoning Commission.
She was also instrumental in formation of the Youth Action Council and establishment of a formal Juvenile Review Board. She recently successfully opposed the designation of large swaths of private property in East Granby as conservation areas by an outside organization that did not consult private property owners who would be impacted.
Angela is committed to protecting private property rights at the local level from unwanted intrusion, and to promoting suitable development with positive community and environmental impact in order to ease the tax burden on current East Granby residents and businesses.

 
 

Dan Velcofsky (R – Candidate)

Dan holds a B.A. in business administration from the New York Institute of Technology and has been involved in the computer software industry and construction trades for the past 30 years. Dan previously served as Vice Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission and currently serves as an Alternate. He has also served as a member of the Board of Selectmen. He has been very active in town activities over the years including the East Granby 150th Anniversary Celebration as well as scouting and sports programs. He has lived in East Granby for the past 15+ years with his wife and two children.

 
 
 
 

Jim Luchina (R – Candidate (Alternate))

Jim is a native of Connecticut who has settled in East Granby with his Family. Jim graduated with a degree in philosophy and has spent 30 plus years working outside building local private and public infrastructures. Jim and his wife were drawn to East Granby because of its heavily wooded Open Spaces along with many hiking trails. Jim is currently serving as an alternate on the Zoning Board of Appeals and believes in keeping East Granby rural while promoting it’s current commercial zones.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Katie Hastings (R – Candidate (Alternate))

Katie and her family recently moved to East Granby, motivated by the charm and small-town feel of the community. She graduated from Saint Joseph College and currently works for an area insurance company. She decided to get involved based on the encouragement of several long-term residents

 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Charlie Allen (R – Candidate (Alternate))

Charlie and his family have lived in East Granby since 1981. He is an Army veteran, serving with the 82nd Airborne. Charlie spent 20+ years with the Hartford Police Dept. and another 25+ years with the East Granby Police Dept., where he served as Union President for 10+ years. Board of Assessment Appeals

Aaron Nardi (R – Incumbent)

Aaron grew up in northwest CT and moved to East Granby in 2005 with his wife Marcie and two children. His sons are now in high school and are in the East Granby school system. He has taken active rolls in scouting, little league, and travel basketball over the years with his boys. Aaron has degrees from UConn and Rensselaer in Mechanical Engineering/Materials Science and Mechanical Metallurgy, worked for 22 years with United Technologies Corporation as an engineer, and is currently working for the US Army Research Labs. He has been a member of the Board of Assessment Appeals for over 10 years.

 
 
 
 

Andrea Ullmann (R – Incumbent)

Ann and her husband Bill have lived in East Granby since 1979.We have raised our 4 daughters in town and all have gone through the East Granby School System. She has worked as an aide in the EG school system and was employed by University of Hartford in the Financial Aid/Admission Department for 16 years. Now retired she still volunteers in the EG School System since 2 of her 5 Grandchildren are students in the schools

Zoning Board of Appeals

John Burda (R – Candidate)

John has lived in East Granby since 1987 and considers it his permanent home. He holds a degree from the State University at Worcester and has worked as an Industrial Engineer doing efficiency studies for divisions of Gillette, and Textron and other smaller companies. His responsibilities included increasing productivity by method changes, safety studies and recommendations, energy evaluation studies, and often working with employee suggestions. He has also worked for Finlay Corp. as a fine jewelry Store Manager within G. Fox Store in Hartford as well as other store locations.
John has owned his own business doing personal property appraisals and estate dispersals, including some pro bono work for non-profits. He supports many local organizations such as East Granby Volunteer Fire Department, the Ambulance Association, Historical Society, and Friend to Friend Food Pantry & Thrift Shop.

 
 

Philip Chester (R – Candidate)

Phil and his wife, Sue, have resided in East Granby since 2000. They raised their two sons , Bryan and Alex, who both graduated from East Granby . He previously lived in several states before transferring to Connecticut with Chubb Insurance.

He holds a BBA degree ( finance) and MBA degree from Adelphi University. He also holds his CPCU designation in the insurance industry. Phil currently works as Senior Vice President and National Healthcare practice leader for AmWINS Brokerage of New England. Phil has been employed by AmWINS Brokerage since 2008. He previously held positions with various insurance companies including Chubb Insurance, Zurich Insurance and Crum & Forster Insurance . Phil remains active with several charities including Hole in the Wall Gang, Foodshare and My Sister’s Place.

He previously sat on the East Granby Economic Commission.
